RHINOPLASTY

The nose is right at the middle of our face and we see it directly every day. Apart from its shape, it is our most important organ for breathing. Nose esthetic surgeries are the most common type of esthetic surgeries. Rhinoplasty is the reshaping, downscaling or enlargement of certain areas of the nose. At the same time, nose reconstruction surgeries can be performed due to congenital anomalies or traumas.

In nose esthetic, the aim is to obtain a nose which is proportional to the person’s face, natural, its respiratory features are functioning and also satisfies the patient. Surgery or non-surgical applications may be added to other areas of the face (jaw, cheekbone) to achieve a proportional facial structure.

Detailed medical information about the patient is obtained. The patient is asked about what he thinks about his nose and his expectations from the operation. The patient is told about, what kind of applications may be applied on his nose, and what kind of appearance can be obtained. External and internal examination of the nose is performed. If necessary the internal structure of the nose is examined with ct (computerized tomography). Necessary photographs are taken.

There are two types of methods. Open Rhinoplasty or Closed Rhinoplasty. The open rhinoplasty is made by incision of the midline structure (columella) which is extending from the nose end between the nostrils toward the upper lip and intranasal cuts. Closed surgeries are performed only with intranasal cuts through nostrils. Both methods can be applied according to the nose structure of the patient, the doctor’s knowledge and experience..

It is done under general anesthesia. The operation lasts about 1-2 hours. According to the selected method, for problems related to breathing, Septoplasty, and for the reshaping of the nose, Rhinoplasty is done. The intranasal cartilage and bone structure are reshaped. If we need cartilage, we usually use midline cartilage called septum. If there is not enough, patient’s own ear or rib cartilages can be used as a source. A special splint is applied to the nose. A tampon is not often inserted into the nose. At the end of the operation, depending on the doctor’s decision, a little, nonadhesive silicone tampon may be placed.

Eating starts after a short time. Cold application is made on the nose and face. This application is recommended for the first 24 hours. The patient should walk after eating.. The same day or the next day the patient is discharged. If the tampon is applied, it is removed after 2-3 days. The splint on the nose is removed on the 7th day and your nose tip sutures are removed. After the splint is removed, you can take showers and return to your job. In the first days breathing is difficult. Swelling and bruises may occur on the face and the nose. Light intensity activities can be started after 3 weeks, and heavy activities can be started after 4-6 weeks. Glasses can be used after 4-6 weeks.

You should use medicines regularly that prescribed by your doctor. Ocean water is recommended for intranasal cleaning. In addition, accumulated blood clots in the nose should be cleaned with the help of creams to be used together with cotton swabs.

Moderate swellings last for about 2-3 weeks. The shape of the nose starts to get clear after about 1 month. At the end of this period, 70-80% of swellings will be reduced. The remaining 10-20% of the swelling lasts for months. It will take about 1 year for the swellings to disappear completely.

WILL I LIKE THE SHAPE OF MY NOSE?

Patients with realistic expectations before rhinoplasty are often satisfied. Before surgery, what can be done and what can not be done should be explained very clearly.

WHEN CAN I BREATHE NORMALLY?

The inside of the nose will also swell like the outside of the nose. As blood clots are added in early stages, breathing will be difficult. As the swelling diminishes and the nose is cleaned, breathing will improve.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS?

Complications are very rare. Post-surgical nasal bleeding, infection and breathing difficulties may occur. These are minor complications that can be treated easily in the early period.

WILL I NEED SURGERY AGAIN?

Rhinoplasty, which is needed again after the first operation, is called Revision surgery or Seconder rhinoplasty. It is a much more difficult in comparison to the first operation. The need for repeat surgery is very rare. If you have any complaints about your nose after it takes it’s clear shape, you can apply to your doctor.
