DEPILATION

Depilation is the process of removing unwanted body hair. It may be performed with various devices. Light-based devices give transient results, whereas lasers give lasting results.

The energy emitted by the laser application is absorbed by the melanin pigment in the hair follicle and transformed into thermal energy. The hair follicle is destroyed, thereby hindering the nutrition of the hair. Laser beams cause specific damage in the dark colored melanin pigment. Therefore, more successful results are yielded in people with light complexion and dark hair. If the person is suntanned, there is a risk of burning since the skin color gets darker with increased melanin.

Body hair should not be removed using threads, tweezers, or wax for at least 3 weeks prior to laser depilation. Chemical peeling should be avoided before the process and for at least two weeks prior to the process. Solarium or sun should be avoided before and after the session. The hairs should be removed completely one day before the session.

Mild redness may occur after the session. It is not used in pregnant women. The patient may easily return to social life. The sites of application should be moisturized and protected against sun. Depilation may be performed in persons from the age of 17. A reduction by 80% after depilation indicates the success of therapy.

The duration of procedure varies depending on the body part. The procedure takes 20-30 minutes. Although the course of removal of hair varies depending on the system used and body part, there must be 30 days between two sessions. As the sessions increase, intervals may be extended. Approximately 4-8 sessions may be required. The body parts with light colored hair do not yield any result; therefore, the patient should be correctly analyzed.
