The growing of female type breast in men is called gynecomastia. It is a common process of removal of enlarged breasts in men. It is a type of benign breast enlargement; however, it results in unaesthetic appearance and may cause self-confidence issues in the individual.

It may be seen in newborns, adolescents, and elderly people; in hormonal disorders, certain types of cancer; in case of alcohol use, use of certain drugs, and Steroid use. The most common reason is that it is anatomical. If no additional condition that causes the gynecomastia is detected, and the breast tissue is present for more than a year; the person is referred to surgery.

Detailed information about the patient is collected. Breast examination is performed. Certain tests may be required in order to exclude comorbidities. The surgery may be unilateral or bilateral. It is frequently accompanied by tenderness. Excess skin is measured. The content of the breast tissue is worked out. There may be growing of female type breast, increased fatty tissue, or both. Systemic examination is performed. Afterwards, breast ultrasound is necessarily performed for the breast content. Breast measurements and photographing are performed before the surgery.

If the fatty tissue is excess, liposuction is performed; but if the breast tissue is excess, tissue removal by incision around the nipple is performed. In case of excess skin, it should necessarily be removed. These methods may be used in combination with each other.

The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and takes approximately 1-1.5 hours. The surgeries that are performed as per the breast structure vary. A corset is used after dressing.

You usually stay for one night in the hospital. Postoperative feeding is initiated in a short time. Use of a drainage tube is not common. Antibiotics and analgesics are prescribed. Dressings will be kept open following day 2 or 3, after which you will only wear a specialized corset. You may have a bath after then. Pain, swelling, and bruises may occur in the breasts that regress within 7 to 10 days. You may get back to work after five days but heavy activities should be avoided for 4-6 weeks. You should wear your specialized corset for 3 to 6 weeks.

Liposuction and/or tissue removal surgeries are usually performed. For liposuction, very small holes on the chest wall will be enough. In case of tissue removal, crescent incision is performed between the dark area of your breast around the nipple and the light area. There would be minimal scars, and the specific treatment for scars will be applied together with your doctor.

The results of the surgery are permanent unless excessive weight change occurs. The results are quick and pleasing. It results in significantly increased self-confidence in the individuals.
